WE San Francisco
WE San Francisco is a new group started to create a local action group for the Bay Area in order to help San Francisco and beyond take the steps necessary to halt global warming.

Hey We! First post to We; big step.

I began exploring how one goes about purchasing their electricity from carbon-emission free sources. I was excited to see that Pacific Gas & Electric, the company that supplies power to most of Northern California, offers something called a ClimateSmart program, which claims to allow customers to be "climate neutral." They have a pretty graph even.

I'm not excited anymore. Not only can customers not purchase their electricity from entirely carbon free sources here, the offset program, which is what ClimateSmart attempts to be, is pretty lousy apparently...

If America is to achieve Energy Independence then we must allow small and moderate sized electricity projects that contribute to the electricity supply of our country.

Currently, each electricity provider has different procedures, requirements and pay rates.

We must begin to treat the Electricity grid as a national system. There must be a standard across the nation for interconnection as well as a National Electricity Backbone, that will connect the rural low electricity demand areas with their large and renewable resources in our countryside with our high electricity demand urban centers on the coasts.
Hey there We SF: Rarely do we have the opportunity to make a difference in specific policy issues concerning the climate crisis. But if you live and vote in San Francisco here is your chance to make a difference! According to VoteSolar.org, the SF Solar Energy Initiative, which would provide rebates to purchasers of solar installations is up for vote before the board of Sups this Tuesday, June 3, and the outcome very much hangs in the balance. Curiously it is the so-called progressive wing that is opposing it most aggresively. VoteSolar has identifed Sups Tom Ammiono, Sophie Maxwell, Aaron Peskin and Gerardo Sandoval as the key swing votes. Email them today (first.last@sfgov.org) and politely request that they support Supervisor Dufty's version of the Solar Energy Initiative. To give you a head start Here's my sample letter to the sups; Dear Supervisors Ammiano, Maxwell, Peskin and Sandoval, I am writing to urge your support for Supervisor Bufty\'s Solar Energy Initiative. Of the available options under consideration ONLY this measure will provide more clean, renewable energy for San Franciscan\'s and help wean us from dependency on imported, dirty fossil fuels and create more green jobs. Supervisor Mirkarimi\'s alternative is well intentioned but will not result significant renewable energy. Part of his objective is to serve the energy needs of residents and non-profits that otherwise might not be able to afford going solar. But as you know it is these constituents that suffer the most from fossil fuel pollutants and benefit the most from more good, green jobs. Supervisor Bufty\'s proposal is a visionary step to supporting a fledgling industry that will resonate around the state and around the country, and will establish San Francisco as a leader in the effort break our fossil fuel dependency and provide clean energy for all and green jobs for many! Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, (Full name and SF address)
